Import Export Code (IEC): how to get one

Who needs an IEC, applying through DGFT, and the yearly update many businesses miss.

Who needs it

Any business importing or exporting goods, or services where export benefits are claimed. Customs and banks ask for it on cross-border transactions.

Documents

  • PAN of the business
  • Address proof of the business premises
  • Cancelled cheque or bank certificate
  • Aadhaar-linked mobile for verification

Keeping it active

The IEC must be updated on the DGFT portal every year between April and June, even if nothing has changed. If it isn't, the code is deactivated until updated.
